OPTICAL CT (OCT) SCAN GUIDE

WHAT IS AN OCT SCAN?

Our most sophisticated scan, called OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), provides our optometrists with a 3D representation of the internal structures of the eye. It makes it possible to image the retina in such detail that each layer’s thickness can be determined.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES AN OCT SCAN FROM THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD OF VIEWING THE RETINA DURING AN EYE EXAM?

We can only see the retina’s outermost layers when viewing the back of the eye conventionally. Compared to a traditional viewing, an OCT 3D scan gives us images of the 10 layers of the retina, which provides a significant amount of more information.

WHO NEEDS AN OCT SCAN?

Anyone who is at least 16 years old should schedule an OCT scan. This is a fantastic way to keep track of any changes in our patients’ eye health over time and enable early detection of a number of eye conditions. Patients with certain conditions, such as diabetes, as well as those with a family history of glaucoma or other genetic eye issues are also advised to get an OCT scan.

HOW DO OCT SCANS FUNCTION?

Light waves are used in this technology, much like sound waves are used in ultrasounds, to take pictures of the retina. After being asked to sit in front of the device and focus on a target for a few seconds, it will scan your eyes. A qualified optometrist examines this scan and explains the results.

ARE OCT SCANS SECURE?

OCT scans are absolutely painless and safe. There are no negative effects from the scan, which is a very quick procedure.

AN OCT SCAN IS PERFORMED FOR WHAT PURPOSE?

In comparison to any other scan or conventional viewing method, OCT scans can assist in identifying sight-threatening eye conditions early. Even if your eyes are in good shape, an OCT scan will help with your future eye care because it allows us to track your eye health and condition over time and look for changes, making it possible for us to identify potential eye conditions earlier and refer you for additional care.

WHAT DISEASES CAN BE DETECTED BY AN OCT SCAN?

For the majority of severe eye conditions, prevention is crucial because, in their early stages, they frequently go undetected and, if left untreated, can result in irreversible vision loss and even blindness. Numerous severe eye conditions can be diagnosed with the help of an OCT scan. The following are just a few of the ailments that can be detected:
